Cast Iron Grates

Cast Iron Grates

9 products

A cast iron grate replaces your Grill Bill kamado's standard stainless steel grate: cast iron gets hotter, holds that heat longer, and gives a deeper sear mark and a crispier crust on meat and vegetables. Available as a full round main grate in 16, 21 and 23/23.5 inch, or as a half-moon version for the Smart Qooking Multilevel system.

Pick your grate to match your kamado: Ø 32.5 cm for the 16 inch Medium, Ø 47 cm for the 21 inch Large, and Ø 51 cm for the 23/23.5 inch XL. The half-moon grates (21 and 23.5 inch) combine on one level with a stainless steel half or another Smart Qooking accessory.

What is a cast iron grate for a kamado BBQ?

A cast iron grate replaces or complements your kamado's standard stainless steel grate: cast iron gets hotter and holds that heat longer, giving a deeper sear mark and a crispier crust on meat and vegetables. Grill Bill supplies them as a full round grate for the main level — in 16, 21 and 23 inch — and as a half-moon version for the Smart Qooking Multilevel system, so you combine cast iron with stainless steel on one level.

  • 16 inch (Medium): full round grate, Ø 32.5 cm — € 59,-
  • 21 inch (Large): full round Ø 47 cm € 68,99, or half-moon € 39,95
  • 23 / 23.5 inch (XL): full round Ø 51 cm € 79,-, or half-moon € 49,95
  • Lightly oil the cast iron after use — it'll stay rust-free and last for years

Why choose cast iron?

Four things that make a cast iron grate grill differently from your kamado's standard stainless steel grate.
  • Material

    Heat-retaining cast iron

Cast iron heats up more slowly than stainless steel, but once hot it transfers far more heat to the cooking surface — a cold piece of meat won't drop the temperature.
  • Result

    Deeper sear marks, crispier crust

The higher heat transfer sears meat and vegetables more tightly, giving a darker crust and less chance of a grey band.
  • Shape

    Full round or half-moon

A full round grate replaces the main grate entirely; the half-moon version combines cast iron with stainless steel on one level of the Smart Qooking Multilevel system.
  • Maintenance

    Oil it after use

Clean the grate while it's still slightly warm, then rub in a light coat of oil — that keeps the cast iron rust-free for years.

About Cast Iron Grates

Cast iron delivers a different result than your kamado's standard stainless steel grate: it heats up more slowly, but once hot it holds far more heat and transfers it to your meat and vegetables. That means deeper sear marks, a crispier crust and less chance of a grey band.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a cast iron and a stainless steel grate?

Cast iron heats up more slowly than stainless steel but holds heat far longer and transfers more of it to the cooking surface. That gives a deeper sear and crispier crust, while stainless steel is lighter and reacts faster to temperature changes.

What is a half-moon grate?

A half-moon grate is a half circle you use on the Smart Qooking Multilevel system. It lets you combine cast iron and stainless steel on one level, for example to grill directly and cook indirectly at the same time.

Which grate size fits my kamado?

16 inch (Ø 32.5 cm) fits the Medium kamado, 21 inch (Ø 47 cm) the Large, and 23 / 23.5 inch (Ø 51 cm) the XL. If in doubt, check your kamado's size on the product page.

How do I maintain a cast iron grate?

Clean the grate while it's still slightly warm, then rub in a light coat of neutral oil. That prevents rust and keeps the cast iron in good condition for years.

Can I order a cast iron grate separately?

Yes, all cast iron grates are available separately as a replacement or addition to your Grill Bill kamado's standard stainless steel grate, in the size that fits your kamado.
