What can you do with a rectangular shichirin table grill?

You set it in the middle of the table, fill the box with charcoal and grill small portions right in front of you: yakitori, skewers, prawns or thinly sliced meat. The elongated box is sized for skewers, whose ends rest on the edges. Indoors works with good ventilation, outdoors always.

    • Fired on charcoal, ready to use within minutes
    • Shape sized for skewers and yakitori
    • For indoors with ventilation and for outdoors on the terrace

A rectangular shichirin table grill is the Japanese way of barbecuing: a small fire, close to the food, with everyone sitting around it themselves. You fill the box with charcoal, put the grate on top and within a few minutes you're grilling yakitori, skewers or prawns straight off the grate. No knobs, no lid, no half-hour wait.

Why the shape of this rectangular shichirin table grill works

The narrow, elongated box is exactly as wide as a skewer is long. That means the ends of your sticks rest on the edge and only the meat hangs above the coals. Your handle stays cool, the fat doesn't drip next to the embers, and you only need a handful of coals to bring the whole length up to temperature. For yakitori that's the difference between simmering and actually grilling.

    How to light it

Light the coals outside the grill, for instance in a chimney starter, and only shovel them in once they're grey all over. That way you avoid smoke and flames at the table. Traditionally binchotan goes in it: it burns long, calmly and almost smoke-free, but good pieces of regular charcoal work too. Find both at the bbq charcoal.

Bill's tipCut everything into bite-sized pieces and put small bowls of marinade and salt on the table. A shichirin works best when the food comes in rounds, not when you dump everything on the grate at once.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use this grill indoors?
Yes, provided you ventilate well, since charcoal releases carbon monoxide. Open a window or use extraction above the table.
Which charcoal should I use best?
Small, hard pieces of charcoal or binchotan. They give long, even heat and hardly smoke, which is pleasant when the grill sits right next to your plate.
What's the difference with the round model?
The round model has a larger, round grilling surface that more people can sit around. This model is elongated and therefore especially strong for skewers.
Does the table underneath get hot?
The base gets warm, so always place it on a heat-resistant mat or tile and never directly on wood or a tablecloth.
    How do I clean it?
Let the ash cool completely and throw it away, brush off the grate and wipe out the inside. Don't spray the box wet while it still holds heat.
