Short answer

What is a kamado BBQ and which one suits you?

A kamado is an egg-shaped barbecue made of thick ceramic that burns charcoal. The ceramic insulates so well that it works as a grill, an oven, a smoker and a pizza oven all at once: from 90 °C for pulled pork to 400 °C for a crisp pizza base. Grill Bill produces its own kamados and sells them directly, with no dealer network, in three ranges and four sizes from 13 to 23.5 inches.

  • Large (21 inch) is the most popular size and cooks for 6 to 10 people
  • Classic for getting started, Pro II for the best value for money, Pro III as the heavy-duty top model
  • One load of charcoal lasts up to 24 hours, usable all year round
  • 10 years' warranty on the ceramic, up to 20 years on the Pro II and Pro III after the free online course
  • Free delivery by appointment in the Netherlands and Belgium within 3 working days
What is a kamado?

The oldest way of cooking,
cast in ceramic.

A kamado is an egg-shaped barbecue made of thick ceramic that burns charcoal. Its shape and material go back to the Japanese ‘mushikamado’ and to the Chinese earthenware ovens of thousands of years ago — a closed cooking chamber that holds heat and spreads it evenly.

Thanks to the thick ceramic dome, a kamado works like an oven. It is a grill, a smoker and a pizza oven in one. The ceramic insulates so well that a single load of charcoal can keep you cooking for up to 24 hours, from a gentle 90 °C for pulled pork to 400 °C for a crisp pizza base.

The result: more tender meat, juicier vegetables and that unmistakable smoky flavour you never get from an ordinary gas or kettle barbecue. One appliance, all year round, for almost anything you want to cook.

How does a kamado work?

Air in, heat locked in, flavour on top.

With our kamado you do not set the temperature with a dial, but with air. By opening or closing two vents you decide exactly how hot your kamado gets, and the ceramic does the rest.
  1. 01

    Adjustable airflow

In our kamado, air comes in through the bottom vent, flows under and through the glowing charcoal and feeds the fire with oxygen. The hot air and smoke then rise through the cooking chamber and leave the kamado through the top vent (the top controller).

By opening the bottom and top vents further or closing them down, you set exactly how much air flows through the kamado: the more air passes through, the hotter the fire gets; the less air, the lower and steadier the temperature stays.

This simple but effective airflow system is what lets you control our kamado so precisely, both at high temperatures and for low & slow cooking.

    stap 01 — adjustable airflow
  2. 02

    Insulation and heat retention

The thick ceramic dome insulates like an oven. Once up to temperature, the kamado stays stable for hours, even in winter. That makes our kamado one of the best barbecues for cooking outdoors all year round.
stap 02 — insulation and heat retention
  3. 03

    Efficient charcoal burn

In a kamado the charcoal burns from the bottom up in a relatively small, controlled zone. Because there is little air at low temperatures, the charcoal burns slowly and cleanly, with hardly any smoke. At higher temperatures more air is let in and the fire gets hotter. The ceramic holds on to the heat, so you can keep burning for a long time on relatively little charcoal.
stap 03 — efficient charcoal burn
  4. 04

    Heat circulation and convection

The egg shape and the way air flows from bottom to top create natural convection. The hot air rises, circulates around the food and leaves through the top. That gives you very even heat. For low & slow cooking you often use a heat deflector (a stone plate), which blocks the direct radiant heat and turns it into indirect convection heat.

In short: good insulation, precise air control and a slow, efficient burn are what make a kamado so controllable and so economical.

stap 04 — heat circulation and convection
What can you do with it?

One kamado.
Every technique.

Grilling & searing
Direct, ferocious heat on a cast iron grate. That gives you fat grill marks and a crust you can almost hear crackle. Ideal for steak, burgers, chicken and vegetables that can take a bit of fire.
Low & slow smoking
A low temperature and a thick cloud of smoke drifting over your meat for hours. That is what turns tough cuts tender and juicy, full of deep smoky flavour. The undisputed king for brisket, pulled pork and ribs.
Baking & pizza
Hot air from every side and a temperature that goes through the roof. Perfect for pizzas with a crisp base, for focaccia, or for anything you would normally bake in an oven, but with more character.
Stir-frying
Fierce heat in a wok or a cast iron pan. Sear fast, keep it moving, done. That typical wok flavour with a proper bite, straight off your kamado.
First cook gently at a low temperature until it is perfect inside, then a fierce sear for the crust. This is how you get thick steaks, côte de boeuf or large cuts exactly right.
Roasting & puffing
Hot, dry air that makes things puff up nicely and turn crisp. Think chicken wings, potatoes or vegetables that need a proper crunch without drying out.
Braising
Low to medium heat with the lid on, so the meat cooks slowly in its own juices or in a good sauce. That is how sturdy cuts like short ribs, featherblade or pork collar turn tender and full of flavour, without you having to watch them constantly.
Indirect cooking
Heat that flows around your food instead of straight underneath it. That lets you cook large cuts, whole chickens or bakes gently and evenly without burning them. The kamado's all-rounder.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know.

A kamado is an egg-shaped ceramic barbecue that burns charcoal. Because the ceramic is thick and insulating, it works as a grill, an oven, a smoker and a pizza oven in one, with an exceptionally steady temperature and a long burn on very little fuel. Everything about ceramic cooking is explained in kamado basics.
Almost anything: grilling and searing at high heat, low & slow smoking (pulled pork, brisket, ribs), baking (pizza, bread), stir-frying and indirect cooking. The temperature range runs from around 90 °C to 400 °C. Every method explained step by step under kamado techniques.
Classic if you are starting out and watching your budget, Pro II as the best value for money if you cook regularly, and Pro III as the heavy-duty top model with every accessory included. 3 out of 10 customers choose the Pro II. Still undecided? Read the full guide to buying a kamado.
Small/Medium for 2–6 people, Large (the most popular) for 6–10 people, and Extra Large for 10–16 people or for cooking several dishes at once.
20+ years is normal with regular maintenance. You get 10 years' warranty on the ceramic egg as standard; with our free course that goes up to 20 years. Gaskets are wear parts and are usually replaced after 4–8 years. Seasonal maintenance is covered under using your kamado.
As standard you get 10 years' warranty on the ceramic egg. Complete the free online course after your purchase, including the exams, and another 10 years is added, up to 20 years in total. You then receive a personal warranty certificate with your own warranty number. The extension applies to the ceramic egg of the Pro II and Pro III; the other parts keep their own term. You do not need to go anywhere for it: the course is online, in your account.
The ceramic performance is comparable. We produce directly and sell without middlemen, which saves up to 30% on the price, and service runs through us rather than through a dealer. Put the brands side by side on compare kamado brands.
If in stock, delivered free within 3 working days in the Netherlands and Belgium, by appointment and right into your garden. Internationally within 5 working days.
