Both brands make ceramic kamados of comparable quality and both give a long warranty on the ceramic. The difference mainly lies in the route to the customer: The Bastard sells through a dealer network, Grill Bill sells direct. On a complete Large that's a difference of 300 to 800 euros, at comparable equipment. The Bastard has a slightly bigger grate and gives 20 years of warranty with no conditions; with Grill Bill the warranty runs from 10 to 20 years once you complete the free online course.

The Bastard Large has a grate diameter of 49 cm versus 47 cm on our Large. On a full plate that's a couple of burgers' difference. If you really want more room, our XL at 52 cm is the better step up.

On everything except the ceramic we give 3 years. With The Bastard the thermometer and wooden side tables get 1 year. The lid gasket is even tighter: 1 year with us, 6 months with them — and we use fibreglass where the entry segment often uses felt.

Our Large comes with two half stainless-steel grates and two half cast-iron grates. With The Bastard you get two half stainless-steel grates. Cast iron is what you want for grill marks and searing; that saves a later purchase.

Is Grill Bill cheaper than The Bastard?

Yes, on comparable models. The cheapest complete Bastard Large has an RRP of € 1,649, our Pro II Large € 1,349, and our best-equipped Pro III Large € 1,599. For the pricier Bastard series the difference runs up to € 800. Note: dealers regularly run promotional prices on Bastard models, so the gap can be smaller during a sale. Why is Grill Bill cheaper? Is the quality lower?

The difference lies in the sales route, not in the ceramic. The Bastard sells through a dealer network, and every link in that chain adds margin. We manufacture ourselves and deliver directly to the customer, so that margin isn't in the price. Above a thousand euros, ceramic barely differs between serious brands; the difference lies in finish, equipment and what's included as standard.

Who gives the best warranty on the ceramic?

The Bastard gives 20 years on dome and base, with no extra conditions. We give 10 years, and 20 years once you complete our free online course. On all other parts we give 3 years, where The Bastard gives 1 year on the thermometer and wooden side tables and 6 months on the lid gasket. Both brands require registration and neither warranty is transferable.

Why do I need to take a course for 20 years of warranty?

Because most damage to a kamado happens in the first few months, from things nobody tells you. Firing up too fast, extinguishing it the wrong way, opening the lid at the wrong moment. Our free online course teaches you exactly that, and since we started offering it we've seen less damage. The course costs no money, just some time. Complete it and we double the term on the Pro II and Pro III.

Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my kamado?

No. That applies to us, but also to The Bastard, Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Monolith and Primo: all warranties apply to the first owner only. For us there's also the fact that we can't establish whether a new owner has taken the course and how the appliance has been treated.

Which size should I choose?

For most households the Large is the right choice: enough for six to eight people and the size that fits most of the accessories. Cooking almost always for two or three, the Medium is enough. For parties and large groups the XL with a 52 cm grate is the better step up. Our Small at € 189 is mainly meant as a tabletop model or for a balcony.

Can I see a Grill Bill in person somewhere?

By appointment in Eindhoven. Because we don't sell through dealers, our kamados aren't in showrooms across the country — that's easier with The Bastard. On the other hand, with us you're in direct contact with the people who make the appliance, even after your purchase.
