When to replace the ceramic firebox
After years of firing up, a crack can appear, often from a knock while scooping out ash or from a big temperature swing. A hairline crack usually isn't a problem: ceramic expands and the pieces stay pressed together. If a piece breaks off the wall or the firebox no longer seats properly against the fire ring, air leaks in the wrong place and your temperature control suffers. Fitting it
Let your kamado cool down completely and remove the grate, heat deflector and fire ring. Lift the old firebox carefully upward, wipe the lower ceramic and the air opening clean, and put the new one in the same spot. Check that it sits level and that the opening lines up neatly with the bottom vent, since that's where your combustion air comes in.
Maintenance
Keep the ash opening clear and scoop out ash once the kamado is cold. Don't push forcefully against the wall while doing so, since that's exactly how most damage happens. Water isn't needed for this.
