What is a BBQ rub shaker used for?

For applying dry spice blends evenly to meat, fish and vegetables. You shake in a fine veil instead of clumps, so the crust colours evenly everywhere and nothing burns. Handy because you only need one hand and don't have to dip into your storage jar.

    • For dry rubs, salt, pepper and spice blends
    • Shake from about twenty centimetres up for an even layer
    • Grind coarse grains first, otherwise the shaker head clogs

A BBQ rub shaker solves a small but persistent problem: getting spices evenly onto your meat. Sprinkling straight from the bag or jar always leaves too much in one spot and too little in another, and you see and taste that in the crust. This shaker from Grill Fanatics spreads the blend in a fine, even layer, so your rub does what it's supposed to do.

What a BBQ rub shaker gets you

Rub only works well when it sits at the same thickness everywhere. Too thick and the sugars in the blend burn before the meat is done; too thin and you barely taste it. A shaker keeps that layer under control, even on a big cut like a pulled pork shoulder or a rack of ribs.

    • An even spice layer over the entire cut of meat, sides included
    • Keeps one hand clean: shake with one, turn the meat with the other
    • Suitable for dry spice blends, salt, pepper and sugar mixes
    • Also handy for vegetables, potato wedges and popcorn seasoning
    • Stops you dipping messy fingers into your storage jar

    How to use it

Fill the shaker with your own blend or a ready-made rub and hold it about twenty centimetres above the meat. From that height the powder falls like a veil instead of a clump. Pat the meat dry first and optionally add a thin layer of mustard or oil so the rub sticks better. Then let the meat rest for a moment so the spices can draw in moisture.

    Cleaning and storage

Clean the shaker dry after use or rinse it and let it dry completely before refilling it: rub with salt and sugar clumps together the moment it meets moisture. Store it in a dry place, not right next to the kamado. Looking for a blend to fill it with, check out the flavourings. More gear for the barbecue can be found under BBQ tools, and if you make your own burgers, pair it with the burger press.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I put wet marinade in it too?
No, the shaker is made for dry blends. For wet marinade, use a brush or a spray bottle.
How much rub should I use per cut of meat?
A thin, covering layer is enough: you should still be able to see the meat through it. More rub doesn't mean more flavour, just more risk of a bitter, burnt crust.
    How do I clean it?
Rinse with warm water and then let it dry completely. Never refill it while there's still moisture inside, as salt and sugar clump together instantly.
Does it also work on a regular barbecue?
Yes. The shaker has nothing to do with the type of barbecue; you use it on the worktop before the meat goes onto the kamado, kettle barbecue or griddle.
