What can you measure with the ThermoWorks Smoke thermometer?

Two temperatures at once: the core of your meat and the air inside your kamado or smoker. The base station stays by the barbecue, and you take the receiver with you. As soon as a value goes outside your set limits, you get an alarm, even indoors.

  • Two channels, each with its own upper and lower limit
  • Separate receiver with backlit display and alarm
  • Core probe and chamber probe with grate clip included

A long session on the kamado stands or falls on watching two numbers: how hot is it under the lid, and how far along is the meat. The ThermoWorks Smoke thermometer measures both at once and sends them to a separate receiver, so you don't have to step outside every quarter of an hour. You put the brisket on, set your limits and take the receiver inside with you.

What the ThermoWorks Smoke thermometer delivers in practice

The base station stays by the barbecue and reads both probes. The receiver in your pocket beeps as soon as one of the two values goes outside the limits you've set. If your fire dies down, or the kamado runs hot after a gust of wind, you'll know before your overnight session goes sideways. It's also handy for finishing: once the core nears its target temperature, you walk outside instead of guessing.

How to set it up

Clip the chamber probe to the grate, at the spot where your meat sits, and push the core probe into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding bone and fat. Route the cables past the lid's edge to the outside and keep them away from direct flame. Then set an upper and lower limit for each channel, for example a window around your cooking temperature and a target temperature for the meat.

My SMOKE by Thermoworks arrived today and it exceeds all my expectations. I chose this thermometer based on the extremely good reviews on so many sites. It is very robust, extremely simple to use, and does not tie up my phone as a receiver. I can recommend it to anyone. When I decided to buy, apart from the manufacturer in USA, I could only find it in stock and available in EU from Grill Bill. A few emails and some very helpful responses and it was ordered and posted to Greece. I can also highly recommend Grill Bill as a most helpful, efficient and friendly supplier, wherever you live. I

Frequently asked questions

How far does the receiver reach?
In open ground you'll easily cover your garden and living room. Thick walls, concrete and metal frames reduce that range, so test it before starting an overnight session.
Can I leave the probes in the kamado during a long session?
Yes, that's what they're for. Route the cables past the lid's edge to the outside and keep them away from direct flame, since the cable is less heat-resistant than the tip.
What's the difference with a Thermapen?
A Thermapen you prod in for a snapshot reading and it's lightning fast. This Smoke keeps measuring throughout the session and alerts you. Many people use both side by side.
Can it stay out in the rain?
The housing is splash-proof, so a shower is no problem. Submerging it or leaving it standing in a puddle is another matter and best avoided.
