What can you do with a 44 cm cast iron griddle?

On one side you fry and grill on it: meat, fish, vegetables, onions or pancakes, with enough surface for a group. Flip it over and it's a fire bowl to build a wood or charcoal fire in. The cast iron holds the heat, so cold ingredients don't cool the plate down straight away.

    • Cast iron, 44 cm diameter, from Valhal Outdoor
    • Griddle and fire bowl in one product
    • Suitable for open fire, charcoal and gas

This 44 cm cast iron griddle from Valhal Outdoor is kept deliberately simple. With the flat side up you have a generous griddle where you can fit onions, bacon, prawns, pancakes or a whole load of vegetables at once. Flip it over and you have a fire bowl to build a wood or charcoal fire in, handy for when the company stays outside after dinner.

Cast iron works in your favour here. The plate takes a little while to come up to temperature, but holds that heat afterwards. Put a cold piece of meat on it and the temperature barely drops, so you still get a good sear instead of stewed meat.

    • Material: cast iron
    • Diameter: 44 cm
    • Brand: Valhal Outdoor
    • Two functions: griddle and fire bowl
    • Suitable for open fire, charcoal and gas

How to use the 44 cm cast iron griddle

Let the plate warm up gently over moderate heat and grease it lightly before you start. Don't work with a full layer of ingredients at once, as the surface cools down and the food starts to stew. As a fire bowl, set it on a heat-resistant, flat surface, never directly on a wooden deck or patio tiles that can crack.

    Maintenance

Clean it while the plate is still warm: hot water, a brush and dry it straight away. Then a thin layer of oil over it. Store it dry and covered, since cast iron left outside in the rain visibly rusts within a few days.

Perfecte vuurschaal voor hete kolen in een Dutch Oven sessie maar ook super geschikt als gietijzeren skillet voor bijv. de BGE sticky drumsticks op de kamado (zonder de pootjes). Aanrader!

    Frequently asked questions

Can I put the plate on my kamado?
Only if the diameter fits within the rim of your kamado. At 44 cm that's too large for most models; use it over a fire basket, on a stand or on a large barbecue instead.
Do I need to season the plate before first use?
Heat it well once with a thin layer of neutral oil. After that the protective layer builds up further with every use.
    Can it stay outside?
Better not. Cast iron and rain don't mix well. Store it dry or cover it.
What's the difference with a skillet?
A skillet has high sides and is meant for frying and stewing smaller portions. This plate is flat and wide, so suitable for a lot at once and for quick, hot work.
