What is an oval serving board small used for?

For a single portion, some cheese and sausage or a few tapas per person. The compact board is meant for serving and light carving, not for dividing up a whole piece of meat. Acacia wood is hard and sturdy and stays looking good for years with hand washing and occasional oiling.

  • Solid acacia wood, the smallest size in the oval range
  • For a single portion, snacks, or as an extra board on the table
  • Hand wash and dry standing upright
  • Rub with vegetable oil periodically

The oval serving board small is the smallest size in this range and therefore the board for the smaller jobs. A single portion of meat, a few slices of cheese, olives and bread, or the side dish you want to keep separate. The board is solid acacia wood: hard, sturdy and with a grain that runs from honey brown to dark.

When to choose an oval serving board small

Small boards are often underrated. They're especially handy if you serve per person, if you want to fill a table with several boards side by side, or if you want to keep something separate because not everyone eats the same thing. It also works well as a trivet for a small cast iron pan or a dish.

  • Compact size, ideal for a single portion or a few snacks
  • Solid wood, no veneer or pressed fibre
  • Oval shape with no sharp corners, easy to pass around
  • Combines well with the medium and large boards on one table
  • Takes up little space in the cupboard

How to use it

Cut with a sharp knife and long strokes, so marks in the wood stay shallow. Place something wet, like marinated vegetables or dip, in a small bowl on the board rather than directly on the wood. For meat: let it rest first, then carve.

Maintenance

Hand wash in warm water, rinse briefly and dry standing upright. Rubbing in a thin layer of vegetable oil a few times a year keeps the wood nourished and the colour deep.

Compare the sizes side by side at serving boards and cutting boards. Find a matching knife in the knife collection, and everything around cutting and serving is together under knives and cutting boards.

Frequently asked questions

How many people does this size serve?
Count on one person as a plate, or two if you use it as a sharing board with cheese and bread alongside. For a group, place several side by side or choose a larger size.
Can I cut on it?
Light cutting is fine. For heavy prep work, a thick cutting board is better, so the serving board stays looking neat for longer.
Can it go in the dishwasher?
No. Wood and dishwashers don't mix: the board warps and the grain lifts. Hand washing with warm water and a brush is enough.
How does it differ from the round board?
The round board is meant to be turned and shared together. The oval small is more elongated and therefore more logical for a single portion or a few slices in a row.
