What exactly does the Grill Bill Smoke Box do?

It's a closed metal box that you fill with smoking wood chips and place near the coals or above a gas burner. That makes the chips smoulder in a controlled way instead of catching flame, and the smoke escapes through the small openings. This way you get smoke flavour even with short cooks and on a gas grill.

  • For kamado and gas grill, article number GBA0033
  • Reusable, chips sold separately
  • Meant for short cooks, not for low and slow

With the Grill Bill Smoke Box you place smoking wood chips right next to the coals of your kamado, or on the grate of your gas grill, so they smoulder instead of burning. That way every dish gets a smoky flavour, even when you're not running a whole smoking session. The closed box with small openings lets the smoke escape while the wood itself doesn't catch fire.

What you use the Grill Bill Smoke Box for

A quick, hot cook like a steak, some vegetables or fish normally picks up little smoke flavour: there's simply not enough time for it. With the Smoke Box you add that flavour anyway, without switching to a full low and slow session with smoking wood chunks.

Cooking on gas, you normally get no smoke at all, because there are no coals for the wood to smoulder on. You then place the box right above a burner: the chips smoulder from the heat and you still get smoke flavour without charcoal.

  • Works on both the kamado and a gas grill
  • Reusable, so no disposable aluminium foil needed
  • Adds smoke flavour to short cooks such as steak, vegetables or fish
  • Stops the chips from catching flame thanks to the closed design
  • Compact enough to fit between the coals or on the grate

How to fill and place the box

Fill the box with smoking wood chips, close it and place it close to the coals or right above a burner. Wait until you see the first smoke coming out of the openings before you put your dish on the grate. Let the box cool down afterwards and tap out the ash for next time.

No chips are included with the box: choose your own from the smoking wood chips. Also check out the rest of the kamado accessories for what else you can use with your barbecue.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Smoke Box also work on a gas grill?
Yes, you place the box right above a burner. The chips inside smoulder from the heat, so you get smoke flavour even without charcoal.
Do the smoking wood chips catch flame in the box?
No, the closed design with small openings makes the chips smoulder instead of catching flame. The smoke escapes through the openings.
Can I reuse the Smoke Box?
Yes, the box is reusable. Let it cool down after use and tap out the residue; so you don't need disposable aluminium foil.
Are smoking wood chips included with the Smoke Box?
No, the Smoke Box is sold on its own. You fill it yourself with smoking wood chips of your choice from our range.
Can I also put chunks in it?
The box is made for chips. Chunks are too big and work better loose among the coals during a longer session.
