What is a cast iron trivet used for?

To put down a hot pan, dutch oven, skillet or grate safely without damaging your table or worktop. This version from Valhal Outdoor weighs a kilo, so it sits stable and can't scorch or melt like cork and wood.

  • Solid cast iron, weighing around 1 kilo
  • For dutch ovens, skillets and hot grates
  • Also usable by the fire bowl or while camping
  • Gets hot itself: pick it up with a glove

Where do you put down a glowing hot dutch oven when you lift it off the kamado? The cast iron trivet from Valhal Outdoor is made exactly for that. It weighs a kilo, so it stands stable on your table or worktop and keeps the heat away from the surface underneath. Unlike cork or wood, cast iron can't scorch or melt, so you don't have to guess whether something has cooled down enough before setting it down.

Why a cast iron trivet next to your kamado

Cooking outdoors means heavy pans and high temperatures. A skillet fresh off the grate is easily above two hundred degrees. A solid stand absorbs that without warping.

  • Protects garden table, worktop and kamado side shelf from heat and grease
  • Stays put thanks to its one-kilo weight
  • Suited to dutch ovens, skillets, saucepans and hot grates
  • Cast iron doesn't warp and lasts for years with normal use
  • Usable while camping, by the fire bowl and simply in the kitchen

How to use it

Have the trivet ready before you take the pan off the fire, so you're not searching for it with your hands full. Place it on a flat surface. On a delicate surface such as a lacquered table, it's best to put a cloth or wooden board underneath, because the cast iron itself also gets hot.

Maintenance

Rinse it with warm water, dry it straight away and rub it lightly with a neutral oil if you're storing it for a while. Cast iron rusts with moisture, so never leave it wet outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it on a wooden table too?
Yes, but put a cloth or wooden board underneath. The cast iron picks up heat from the pan and could still affect a lacquered surface otherwise.
Is it dishwasher safe?
Better not to. Cast iron rusts from prolonged moisture and dishwasher detergent. Rinse it with warm water and dry it immediately.
Does a large dutch oven fit on it?
The stand is roomy enough for common dutch ovens. With a very wide pan, the rim rests partly outside the trivet, so set it on a flat, stable spot in that case.
How do I prevent rust spots?
Dry it immediately after use and rub it lightly with a neutral oil before storing it. Keep it dry and not under a cover that traps moisture.
