This cast iron grill plate 21 inch gives you two cooking surfaces in one accessory. One side has ridges for crisp grill marks on meat or fish, the other side is flat and works as a plancha for onions, prawns or anything else that would otherwise fall through your grate. Because it's a half moon, the other half of your Grill Bill stays free for a stainless steel grate or a cast iron grill.
How to use the cast iron grill plate 21 inch
Place the plate on the fire ring of your Grill Bill without a heat deflector, or simply on top of your stainless steel grate. Cast iron gets hotter than stainless steel and holds that heat for a long time, so you get an even sear and a good crust. Flip the plate over for the flat side and you have a plancha for prawns, onion rings, eggs or a pan full of vegetables.
- Ridged side for steak, fish and vegetables with grill marks
- Flat side as a plancha for small ingredients
- Thick cast iron spreads the heat evenly across the surface
- Half moon, so you cook on two zones at once
- Made for the Grill Bill 21 inch, weighs 5kg
Cast iron alongside stainless steel
Stainless steel reacts quickly to temperature changes but holds little heat. Cast iron warms up more slowly, but then stays hot for a long time. That's exactly why this plate is so well suited to searing: less chance of a grey, overcooked rim around your steak and more chance of a crisp, dark crust. On the other half of your kamado, you cook more gently at the same time.
Maintenance
Clean the plate while it's still a little warm, that's the easiest way, and afterwards rub the cast iron lightly with oil to prevent rust. Never store it away wet.
