With 30cm bamboo skewers from Grill Fanatics you thread satay, brochettes and vegetable kebabs onto a skewer with plenty of room. That's the reason to pick this long size: you make a full portion in one go, and your hand stays well clear of the glow while turning them. Bamboo is light yet strong enough to carry a fully loaded skewer without sagging.
When to choose 30cm bamboo skewers
Cooking for a full table, every action counts. Placing and turning four long skewers is quicker than twelve short ones, and you keep an overview of the grate. The extra length also means the ends stay clear of the fiercest part of the fire when you lay them at an angle across the grate.
- Length 30 cm, room for a full portion per skewer
- Made of bamboo, light yet sturdy enough for heavily loaded skewers
- Hands stay further from the heat when turning
- Suitable for satay, chicken pieces, vegetables, prawns and fruit
- Soaking in water keeps the ends intact over the coals
How to work with it
Soak the skewers in water for half an hour beforehand. Then thread the pieces on tightly, packed against each other, so everything cooks evenly and nothing spins loose. On the kamado you grill them directly over the coals on high heat, or a bit more gently with a deflector if you want to glaze with a marinade.
What to watch for
Bamboo skewers are meant for single use. After a session over the fire they're discoloured and weakened, so throw them away afterwards. Also don't let the ends stick unnecessarily far over the fiercest part of the coal bed.
