What do you use this medium-sized pot on feet for?

For cooking over open fire and loose coals. The feet keep the base clear, so the coals can keep burning and the heat stays even. With 6.1 litres you cook stew, soup or bread for around four to six people, with coals below and possibly on the lid.

  • Capacity 6.1 litres, solid cast iron
  • Three feet for fire bowl and campfire
  • Lid suitable for placing coals on top

The dutch oven 6 litre from Valhal Outdoor holds exactly 6.1 litres and, thanks to the three cast feet, is mainly meant for cooking over fire. You set it right in the middle of a bed of glowing coals without flattening them, so air keeps getting through and the coals keep burning steadily.

Six litres is a pleasant size for most households: enough for four to six people's worth of stew or soup, and still manageable to lift when full. The cast iron distributes the heat evenly and holds onto it, even on a windy evening.

How to work with a dutch oven 6 litre

Set the pot on a layer of glowing coals and shovel coals onto the lid if you like. Heat from below alone is enough for stewing; heat from above and below turns it into a real oven, which you need for bread, casseroles and roasted meat. Adjust the temperature by removing or adding coals, not by moving the pot.

With or without feet

Cooking more often on the grate of a kamado or indoors on the stove? Then choose the version without feet. Got a fire bowl or a campfire instead? Then this version with feet is the most practical.

Maintenance

Clean the pot with hot water and no washing-up liquid, dry it immediately and rub it with a thin layer of oil. For handling the hot lid you'll find tools at the cast iron accessories. All sizes sit together at the Dutch ovens.

Frequently asked questions

How many people do you cook for with 6.1 litres?
For a stew you end up with around four to six portions. If you often cook for larger groups, the 8 litre size suits better.
Can the pot with feet also go on the stove?
That's not convenient, since the feet then sit on the hob and the pot wobbles. Choose the version with a flat base for that instead.
How many coals do I place on the lid?
That depends on the temperature you want. A thin layer over the whole lid gives moderate oven heat; more coals on top makes everything crustier.
Can the pot go in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher detergent strips the built-up layer of fat, and then cast iron starts to rust. Hot water, drying well and a light coat of oil is enough.
