What can you do with this cast iron pot on feet?

You cook outdoors with it for a large group, right above or among glowing coals. The feet keep the base clear, so the coals keep burning and the heat stays even. With over eight litres you cook a pot of stew or chilli for eight to twelve people.

  • Capacity over 8 litres, solid cast iron
  • Three feet for use in loose coals
  • Lid suitable for placing coals on top

This dutch oven 8 litre from Valhal Outdoor is the largest in the range and made for cooking over fire. The three cast feet lift the base just clear of the ground, so you can set the pot right in the middle of a bed of glowing coals without flattening the coals and losing the draught.

With over eight litres of capacity you cook for a sizeable group in one go: a pot of stewed meat, chilli or goulash for eight to twelve people fits in without trouble. The heavy cast iron distributes the heat evenly and holds onto it, even when it's cold or windy outside.

How to cook with a dutch oven 8 litre

Build a small bed of coals, set the pot on it and shovel coals onto the lid if you want heat from above and below, for example for bread or a casserole. If you're only stewing, heat from below is enough. Move the coals rather than the pot when you want to adjust the temperature.

Feet or a flat base

Cooking mostly on the grate of your kamado or also indoors on the stove, the version without feet is more practical, since it sits flat. The version with feet is meant specifically for open fire and loose coals.

Maintenance and accessories

Rinse the pot with hot water and no washing-up liquid after use, dry it thoroughly and rub it lightly with oil. Because a hot lid is awkward to grab, a lid lifter is handy; you'll find one at the cast iron accessories. The rest of the range is at the Dutch ovens.

Frequently asked questions

Can this pot with feet also go on a flat grate?
It can, but it then sits higher and less stable on a narrow grate. For a grate or stove, the version without feet is more convenient.
How many people does over 8 litres serve?
For a stew you end up with around eight to twelve portions. For smaller groups, the 6.1 or 3.8 litre sizes suit better.
Can I put coals on the lid?
Yes, that's exactly the idea for baking and roasting. With coals above and below you get an oven effect, which works well for bread and casseroles.
How do I lift the pot when it's hot?
Use heat-resistant gloves and hold it by the handle. For the lid, a lid lifter is recommended, since it's heavy and hot.
