What do you use a stainless steel ash scoop for?

You use it to clear ash and unburnt coal leftovers from the bottom of your kamado. That keeps the air supply clear, so your temperature responds better to your vents. The scoop is made of stainless steel and fits every Grill Bill kamado, from 13 to 23 inch.

    • Size 31 x 14 x 6 cm, weight approximately 500 grams
    • Stainless steel, so resistant to damp ash
    • Universal: no separate size needed per kamado

With this stainless steel ash scoop you clear the excess ash out of the bottom of your Grill Bill in one go. You scoop the coal leftovers and the ash together and throw them away, so your kamado is clean again for the next cook. Because the scoop is made of stainless steel, the ash doesn't attack the material and it lasts for years.

Why a stainless steel ash scoop makes the difference

After a few cooks, ash builds up at the bottom of your kamado, along with bits of unburnt charcoal. Leave that lying there and it blocks the airflow through the grate, making it harder to hold a stable temperature. You notice it most at low temperatures: your fire dies down while your vents are wide open. A quick scoop-out solves that.

    • Keeps the air supply at the bottom clear, so your temperature responds better to the vents
    • Narrow shape reaches right into the corners of the fire box
    • Sturdy enough to scoop up coarser coal leftovers as well
    • Stainless steel, so no rust from damp ash
    • Size 31 x 14 x 6 cm and around 500 grams, comfortable in the hand

    How to use it

Preferably work on a cooled or barely warm kamado. Loosen the ash first, then scoop it into a metal bucket and not into a plastic bin: ash holds embers for longer than you'd think. Keep the coarser coal leftovers separately, you can simply burn them again on your next cook.

Why not a garden scoop or a vacuum cleaner

A garden scoop is usually too wide and too blunt to reach exactly into the corners, and an ordinary vacuum cleaner is simply a bad idea with ash that still holds heat. This scoop is matched in shape and size to working inside the tight space of a kamado.

Bill's tipMake it a fixed habit: scoop it out before you add fresh coals. It takes a minute and saves you a lot of temperature trouble during a long cook.

Combine the scoop with the ash drawer for a complete clean, or with the ash poker to loosen the ash first. At the kamado accessories you'll find the rest of the maintenance tools for your Grill Bill.

    Frequently asked questions

What material is the ash scoop made of?
Stainless steel. That means it won't rust away in damp ash, and the edge stays sturdy enough to scoop up coal leftovers too.
What are the dimensions and weight?
    The scoop measures 31 x 14 x 6 cm and weighs approximately 500 grams.
Which Grill Bill kamado does it fit?
All sizes, from 13 to 23 inch. So you don't need to check the size of your kamado when ordering.
Can I use it while the ash is still warm?
The stainless steel can handle residual heat, but always scoop warm ash into a metal bucket, not a plastic bin or bin bag.
How often should I remove the ash?
With intensive use, after every few cooks, and in any case as soon as you notice your kamado responding more slowly to the vents.
